Understanding the PM Surya Ghar Portal Process
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) is the central point for all subsidy applications. Every Kerala homeowner must complete this online process before and after installation to qualify for the MNRE subsidy.
The portal has 8 key steps spanning approximately 45–75 days. Here is a stage-by-stage breakdown with the documents and timeframes involved.
| Step | Action | Timeframe | Key Document Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Portal Registration | Day 1 | KSEB consumer number + Aadhaar OTP |
| 2 | Feasibility Application | Day 1–3 | KSEB bill photo, roof details |
| 3 | KSEB Site Assessment | Days 7–37 | KSEB sanction letter (via portal) |
| 4 | Solar Installation | Days 37–45 | MNRE vendor invoice |
| 5 | Commissioning Submission | Days 45–50 | Equipment certificates, photos |
| 6 | KSEB Net Meter Install | Days 50–70 | Bidirectional meter fitted by KSEB |
| 7 | Bank Details Submission | Day 70 | Cancelled cheque / passbook copy |
| 8 | Subsidy Credit | Within 30 days | Bank account confirmation |
Steps 1–2 and Step 7 are consumer-controlled and take only a few hours each. Steps 3, 6, and 8 are KSEB and government-controlled — these are the stages that require patient follow-up. Use the portal's built-in grievance module if any step exceeds its stated timeline.
Your PM Surya Ghar Application Reference Number is your most important document throughout the entire process. Save it immediately after registration — you'll need it for every follow-up with KSEB, and it's the only way to file a grievance if your application is delayed.
Who Can Apply on the PM Surya Ghar Portal?
The PM Surya Ghar portal is open to all residential electricity consumers in India. To complete the Kerala-specific application successfully, you must have:
- A valid KSEB LT domestic consumer account number (10-digit number on your electricity bill)
- An Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP-based portal verification
- A bank account in your name for subsidy credit (nationalised or scheduled commercial bank)
- Ownership or long-term occupancy rights over the property where installation will occur
- A roof that can structurally support solar panel mounting (flat RCC or tiled sloped roof)
Tenants can apply for the PM Surya Ghar portal registration if they have a KSEB account in their name. However, landlord written consent is strongly recommended before proceeding with installation, as the solar system becomes a fixture of the property.
